Don’t Build
“We Try to Avoid Building” Engineers
Sounds counter intuitive – but actually it’s in your interests – and all of ours.
The more we can prove the value of an existing structure or reuse of a building – the less new build we need. This is often harder to do than designing new build, where you control all the parameters. It takes judgement and experience. But the less we build, the less of our finite resources we use, the better that it is for our planet and all of us, the less time it will take us on site and the less it will cost you.
If we’re perfectly honest – the world probably doesn’t need new buildings. We already have everything we need, it just might be in the wrong hands, in need of a little pragmatism and modification to make it fit for purpose.
Of course, sometimes we do end up building new. When we do, our approach is to minimise our materials and our impact; we should leave site better than it started and able to improve further.
At Bailiss&Co, this is what we’re good at.
